Moon Township, Pa. – Vasiliki Karambatsa is the latest in an ever-growing list of Greek players to make their way on to the
Robert Morris University women's basketball roster. RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia announced Tuesday that Karambatsa, a 6'1" forward from Athens, signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her playing career with the Colonials.
"We are excited to have signed Viki to become a member of this program. Getting to know her through the whole recruiting process, we learned what a great student-athlete we will be bringing to the University," said RMU associate head coach
Charlie Buscaglia. "With the attitude and work ethic that she has displayed, Viki can become a very strong player in her four years at RMU."
Karambatsa is the fourth player to join the Robert Morris program from Greece since 2010.
Artemis Spanou was the groundbreaker, joining the Colonials in 2010 and becoming the most decorated player in program history before starting a professional career in Turkey. Anna Kavasila was part of that class as well before Anna Niki Stamolamprou brought her talents to Moon Township in 2013-14. Stamolamprou was a Northeast Conference All-Rookie team selection as a freshman and a first team All-NEC pick this past season.
"We love Greece, and we love having another talented Greek player choosing to join the program for her collegiate career," said
Charlie Buscaglia. "Finding the right fit is always the most important priority to our program. Viki will fit in very well with our existing team and we are looking forward to watching her develop in our program."
Karambatsa has been a member of the Greek National program dating back to 2012 when she played in the U16 European Championship. Since then, she has played in two U18 and a U20 European Championship. In her international debut in 2012, she scored five points and had five rebounds against Russia, going on to average 4.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in her team's eight games. Karambatsa shot 55.2 percent (16-29) in her first international tournament.
Last summer, Karambatsa averaged 4.2 points and 5.3 rebounds for her national side at the U18 championships which included a 10-rebound game in a 14-point win over Sweden. The Athens-native was especially busy in 2013 playing in both the U18 and U20 European Championships. In addition to averaging 5.6 points and 6.2 rebounds, she played alongside Stamolamprou for the U18 squad. Her best performance came against Slovenia as she just missed out on a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. At the 2013 U20 championships, she was on the same team as both Spanou and Stamolamprou. Karambatsa saw limited playing time in the event during which she was just 17 years of age.
Robert Morris is coming off an appearance in its second consecutive NEC Championship game and finished the season at 17-15 overall and 13-5 in the league. It was the team's fourth championship appearance since 2006-07.
