Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University rowing team opened its 2017-18 campaign Saturday by competing at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa.
In the first competition of the year, the Colonials earned silver in the Varsity 4, while the Varsity 8 took home bronze. The Varsity 4 consisted of sophomore
Elizabeth Cottrell, junior
Hannah Daman, sophomore
Sophie Carroll and junior
Miriam Levenson and posted a time of 18:08.9.
In the Varsity 8, RMU crossed the finish line with a time of 15:15.4 to earn third, behind Pittsburgh (14:25.3) and Penn State (15:05.1) and ahead of VCU (15:42.6), Cincinnati (15:44.0), Carnegie Mellon (15:47.2), Three Rivers (16:23.3) and Penn State B (16:23.9).
Serving as the coxswain of the Varsity 8 was sophomore
Kestra Harris, and she was joined in the boat by seniors
Lindsay Feltz and
Melissa Asaro, junior
Grace Faye, Carroll, junior
Sara Beth Johnson, sophomores
Kari Campbell and
Kalyssa Pottgeiser and Cottrell.

Robert Morris also competed in singles and doubles action at the Head of the Ohio. In the singles, Levenson claimed fourth, Daman sixth, junior
Kathryn Gossel seventh and junior
Alyssa VanAuken eighth. In the doubles, junior
Emma Smith and Carroll placed sixth, while VanAuken and freshman
Emily Chmelovski finished seventh.
The Head of the Ohio also featured the first collegiate action for the novice squad, which competed in open two, four and eight races. In the Novice Eight, the Colonials took home fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Novice Eight A boat recorded a time of 19:23.7 and featured senior
Molly Falcone. Joining her in the boat was freshman

The Novice Eight B squad featured
Kathryn Cooke as the coxswain and posted a time of 19:33.1. Cooke was joined by Chmelovski and freshmen

Madelyn Green.
RMU continues its 2017 fall season Saturday, Oct. 21, by heading down to Morgantown, W. Va., to compete against West Virginia.
