Somerset, N.J. – For the second time in program history, the
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team claimed the Northeast Conference Team Sportsmanship Award. The 2017 NEC Team Sportsmanship honor marks the Colonials' first since 2012. The 2017 Robert Morris University men's golf team was also awarded the 2017 NEC Team Sportsmanship Award for their respective sport.
The Team Sportsmanship Award program, conceived by the league presidents, is designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most clearly demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team captain and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a predetermined set of criteria.
Robert Morris qualified for its second consecutive NEC Tournament this season and fifth overall. Head coach
Andrew McMinn was named NEC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, and freshman
Ryan Smith was named NEC Rookie of the Year. He is the first to earn the major conference accolade in Robert Morris men's lacrosse history. Seven Colonials were named to various All-NEC teams. Junior
Zachary Bryant, sophomore midfield
Tyson Gibson, and sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Heger were named First Team All-NEC honorees. Redshirt attack
Matt Schmidt and sophomore long stick midfield
Jack Toomb earned Second Team All-NEC accolades. Joining Smith on the All-NEC Rookie Team was freshman faceoff specialist
Trey Arnold.
The Colonials concluded the 2017 campaign with nine overall wins to mark the most victories in a season for the program since 2012. Robert Morris went 4-2 in NEC action to tab its second consecutive season with a winning record in league play.
