PITTSBURGH -- For the second time this season, the leading scorer on the
Robert Morris women's hockey team has been recognized as one of the NCAA's 3 Stars of the Week.
Brittany Howard has been named the NCAA's No. 3 Star after amassing seven points, all assists, in a sweep of host and College Hockey America (CHA) rival RIT last Friday and Saturday. The seven helpers led the nation over the weekend, and her four power play points were also the most. Her seven points tied her with No. 1 Star Loren Gabel of defending national champion Clarkson as the highest-scoring player in Division I Jan. 19-21.
Previously, Howard had been named No. 1 Star Nov. 14 for her heroics in a sweep of the Tigers Nov. 10-11, which had been the most recent series win by the Colonials.
It has already been a memorable month for the redshirt senior and first-line center, who was announced by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as the first Dapper Dan Charities Sportswoman of the Year in Robert Morris history Jan. 14. Last Friday, she matched her career single-game high with five points, all assists, as RMU matched its largest margin of victory under head coachÂ
Paul Colontino with a 12-1 romp over RIT.
Her sublime setup of two highlight-reel goals byÂ
Jaycee Gebhard bolstered the Colonials to the comfortable victory and helped make her just the fifth different player in program history to record five helpers in a game. Last Saturday, Howard aided an early power play goal by Gebhard and also picked up a critical assist on the sophomore's equalizer with 1:52 left in regulation.
The London Jr. Devilettes prodigy now shares the CHA assist lead with Gebhard (19) and, coming off the 2016-17 conference scoring title, leads that pack once again with 37 points. Her 97 career assists and 169 lifetime points are both the most in RMU history and second-most among active collegians.
Robert Morris (14-6-3, 8-2-2) returns home for its annual Skate For The Cure series, with CHA nemesis Penn State providing the competition and Howard needing two more goals to become the program's all-time leader. Opening faceoff at Colonials Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday and 3:05 p.m. Saturday.
A free, continuous student shuttle will run 6:00-10:00 p.m. Friday from Lexington/Concord Halls to the main doors of the RMU Island Sports Center. The first 200 fans to that game will receive a replica jersey compliments of Eat'n Park, and admission for Girl Scouts is only $1.00.
Friday's contest is also the second of two "Skate with the Colonials" games this season. Fans can join the team on the ice after the game for free with their own skates, or for just $3.00 to rent from the Island Sports Center's front desk.
On Saturday the team will hold its annual Teddy Bear Toss, where fans are encouraged to bring new stuffed animals, with tags still intact, to throw on the ice when the Colonials score their first goal of the game. They will be collected and donated to UPMC Children's Hospital, while a concurrent cash fundraiser will benefit Our Clubhouse, a non-profit organization providing support to those affected by cancer.
In addition, fans can sign up for the Clearview Federal Credit Union Skill Shot Challenge prior to both games for a chance to win $500.
