Moon Township, Pa. – According to a poll of Horizon League head coaches, the RMU women's basketball team has been picked to finish ninth in the league in 2022-23. The poll was announced Tuesday by the Horizon League.
Tabbed as the 2022-23 preseason favorite is Youngstown State, which earned eight first-place votes and compiled 118 points. Green Bay, picked to finish second, earned a pair of first-place tallies and 106 points, while Cleveland State, selected to claim third, earned a first-place tally and 102 points. Northern Kentucky (88) and Milwaukee (75) round out the top five of the preseason poll.
Led by
Charlie Buscaglia, who enters his seventh year as head coach of the Colonials in 2022-23, RMU returns a pair of starters from a squad that earned a 70-56 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne (3/1) in the first round of the 2022 Horizon League Tournament at the UPMC Events Center last season, including junior forward
Sol Castro and sophomore guard
Alejandra Mastral.
Castro was one of two Colonials to start each of RMU's 28 games during the 2021-22 campaign, providing averages of 8.6 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per contest. She returns as the top leading scorer and rebounder for the Colonials in 2022-23 and in two seasons at RMU has compiled career totals of 409 points and 245 rebounds. In 45 career games, each as a member of the starting lineup, Castro has produced averages of 9.1 points and 5.4 caroms per contest while converting 43.3 percent (177-for-409) of her shots from the field.
The Colonials will also be bolstered by the return of junior guard
Mackenzie Amalia, who led RMU in three-pointers (38) last season in averaging 5.2 points per game.

slated for 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the UPMC Events Center. Doors open to the public at 6:30 p.m., giving fans the opportunity to meet the Colonials for the first time.
The 2022-23 regular season for RMU begins Monday, Nov. 7, when the Colonials welcome Saint Francis U to the UPMC Events Center for an 11:00 a.m. tip. It marks the beginning of a four-game homestand to open the year. Season tickets for the
