Indianapolis, Ind. – Juniors
Emma Brown and
Abby Ryan of the Robert Morris volleyball team were honored by the Horizon League for their efforts in the classroom during the 2022 season. The academic awards were announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
Brown was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team, while Ryan earned honorable mention status in recognition of the pair's hard work and dedication academically and athletically for the Colonials.
To earn the Horizon League All-Academic Team award, a student-athlete must own a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, participate in 50% of a program's competitions and have spent at least one academic year at their respective institution.
Faculty athletic representatives of the Horizon League vote on the teams. Ties are not broken, and student-athletes that earn at least 25% of the votes but are not part of the #HLVB All-Academic Team earn honorable mention status.
Brown, a middle blocker from Westerville, Ohio, and a cyber security major, has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.97. She played in 107 out of 112 sets for the Colonials this past season. She produced 119 kills, 21 digs and led the team in blocks with 61. In her career, she now owns 254 kills, 49 digs and 126 total blocks.
Ryan, an outside hitter from Orchard Park, N.Y., and majoring in nursing, has a cumulative GPA of 3.74. This past season she played in 101 sets. The junior produced 332 kills, 16 service aces and 230 digs. In her career, she now owns 657 kills, 37 service aces and 469 digs. Against Purdue Fort Wayne (10/29) this season she recorded a career high 21 kills. Her 24 digs vs. North Alabama (9/9) was also a career high. Ryan ranked fifth in the Horizon League in kills per set (3.29). Ryan also made the #HLVB All-Academic Honorable Mention team in 2021. This is her second time taking a spot on the list.
"I'm extremely proud of these two student-athletes for earning this award," said head coach
Danny Doherty. "Education is a pillar in our program's culture. They're D1 athletes but will also be successful in their chosen careers."
