Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team opened up the 2007-08 Northeast Conference portion of its schedule this past weekend by splitting a pair of matches, sweeping Wagner, 7-0, Sept. 21, on Staten Island, N.Y., before falling to Sacred Heart, 5-2, in Fairfield, Conn., Sept. 22. The split settles RMU's record at 1-3 in dual-match action in 2007-08.
Against the Seahawks, sophomore Sean Curley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) downed Adam Amster in three sets, 7-5, 5-7 and 7-5, at the No. 1 singles flight, and he was followed by senior Nick Paganetti (The Woodlands, Texas / McCullough), who defeated John Leblanc, 6-1 and 6-1, at No. 2.
At the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles flights, three Colonials garnered 6-0, 6-0 victories, as junior Ryan Cameron (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek) defeated Ben Serbiak, freshman Robert Switzer (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Charlottetown) downed Byron Clohessy and sophomore David Pinto (Burlington, Ontario / Nelson) defeated Will Shuler. In the final singles match of the afternoon, senior Todd Stevens (Prosper, Texas / Prosper) downed Sheldon Wilson, 6-1 ad 6-1.
In doubles play against Wagner, Curley and Paganetti swept Amster and Clohessy, 8-0, at the No. 1 flight, while Switzer and Pinto defeated Leblanc and Serbiak, 8-3, at No. 2. Wilson and Shuler also fell to seniors David Yokitis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and Cyrus Manouchehrian (Toronto, Canada / Toronto) at the No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Against the Pioneers, Switzer evened his singles record at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Chris McDonnell at the No. 4 singles, while Pinto garnered a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Bryan Rodgers at the No. 5 singles flight. Switzer and Pinto also teamed up at the No. 2 doubles flight to garner an 8-5 victory over Chris Ujkic and Mike Syer.
Robert Morris is next in action Tuesday, Sept. 25, when it travels north to Meadville, Pa., for a 5:00 p.m. match against Allegheny.
