Meadville, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team evened its 2009-10 overall record at 2-2 Tuesday afternoon by posting a 5-4 win over Allegheny at Robertson Complex.
The Colonials posted wins at the No.1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles flights while also earning victories in the first two doubles flights. At the No.1 singles flight, freshman Andre Coiro (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil / Rio De Janeiro) earned a three-set victory over Alex Bonfiglio, dropping the first set, 6-2, before rebounding to post 6-3 and 6-4 wins. Coiro is now 3-1 in singles play this season, including a perfect 2-0 at the No. 1 flight.
Junior Daniel Becker (Carnegie, Pa. / Carlynton) also improved to 3-1 in singles play this season with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Evan Gordon at the No. 5 singles, while senior David Pinto (Burlington, Ontario / Nelson) defeated Mike Provenzano, 6-3 and 7-6 (8-6) at the No. 2 singles flight.
In doubles play against the Gators, the teams of Pinto and sophomore Igor Neves (Ponta Pora, Brazil / Ponta Pora) and Coiro and junior Aaron Haas (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Montour) each improved to 3-0 this season with victories at Allegheny.
Pinto and Neves earned an 8-6 win over Max Hennessy and Ben Hurtuk, while Coiro and Haas defeated Uros Predic and Jacob Allmaras, also by the score of 8-6.
Robert Morris concludes its 2009 fall schedule Tuesday, Oct. 6, by visiting Carnegie Mellon Thursday, Oct. 9, before hosting Loyola (Md.) Sunday, Oct. 11, at the North Athletic Complex.
