Moon Township, Pa. - Senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) and junior captain Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) of the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team were each selected as Preseason All-Americans in Inside Lacrosse's recent Face-off Yearbook preview.
Moore and Matisz, who were both chosen as honorable mention selections, become the first student-athletes in Colonial men's lacrosse history to earn preseason All-America recognition. Bryant was the only other Northeast Conference (NEC) school to have two players claim this prestigious distinction.
"As far as individual awards go, we feel they are a byproduct of everyone's efforts throughout the organization," head coach Bear Davis said.
Senior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, British Columbia / Western Reserve Academy) joined Moore and Matisz in earning preseason acclaim as each member of the trio was named to the coaches' preseason All-NEC team.
"These players deserve great recognition as do all of the other members of our roster who put in their best effort on a daily basis," Davis said. "The reality is that there is someone besides them on this team working hard everyday as well that no one talks about that we feel has equal value to the program."
Robert Morris was also selected second in the preseason coaches' poll, placing one spot behind Bryant. The Colonials finished ahead of Mt. St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Wagner, respectively.
"I think preseason rankings are a fun thing to read for the parents and fans of the game," Davis said. "We know that every team in the league is going to be solid. They could have thrown all our names in a hat and pulled them out in that order, and I would agree that outcome very well could happen whatever it would be. All we can control is the effort in how we prepare for each team, not the outcomes of the games."
Moore, a 2010 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) honorable mention All-American, is already the all-time program leader in both points (134) and assists (50) entering his senior season. The reigning NEC Player of the Year ranked 10th in the nation in points per game last season and led the Colonials in points (60) and assists (25) and was second on the team in goals (35). Moore connected on 46.1% of his shot attempts and extended his point streak to 30 games in 2010. He also has registered at least three points in 15 of his last 17 games, dating to April 2009.
Matisz earned All-NEC First Team honors in 2010 after finishing the season third on the squad with 46 points. Matisz, who already ranks sixth all-time at RMU with 66 career points, registered at least one point in every game last season and will enter 2011 with a 19-game point streak. He collected at least four points in more than half of RMU's games and set his career high with six in the Colonials' season-opening 24-17 win at Penn State. Matisz also led the Colonials by recording a hat trick as part of a four-point game at No. 1 Virginia.
Tao-Brambleby joined Matisz and Moore on the All-NEC First Team in 2010 after leading the nation in shooting percentage with a 53.2 % success rate. He also finished eighth nationally in goals per game (2.73) by putting home a team-leading 41 scores in 15 games. Tao-Brambleby is tied for first in all-time goals scored at RMU with 91 and ranks second to Moore in career points with 129. He collected at least five points in six of his final nine games in 2010, including a five-goal outburst against No. 3 North Carolina.
Robert Morris is set to begin the 2011 season looking to build on numerous notable accomplishments from last season. In 2010, the Colonials led the nation in scoring offense with 15.33 goals per game--the second-highest Division I mark since 2002--recorded their first national ranking in school history and collected a program-record 10 wins.
RMU will open its 2011 regular season in Chapel Hill, N.C. against four-time national champion North Carolina Saturday, Feb. 12. The Colonials nearly pulled off an upset of the third-ranked Tar Heels last April, falling by a slim 17-14 margin.
