Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team continued its 2011 campaign Saturday by taking part in the second day of the Bill Van Horne Invitational, hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University, in Wheeling, W.Va.
Freshman Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) led the Colonials by finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 50.98 seconds.
In the 3,000-meter run, freshman Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) crossed the finish line with a time of 9:13.24, good enough to finish fifth. Thompson also posted RMU's top time in the 1,500-meter, finishing with a time of 4:26.18.
In the field events, senior Chris Spataro (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) finished second in the pole vault, while freshman Mitchell Preske (Windsor, Ohio / Grand Valley) notched third in the high jump.
Spataro posted a leap of 4.55 meters (14'11") to trail only Cameron Dougherty of Slippery Rock in the pole vault, who won the event with a final tally of 4.55 meters.
Preske tied for the top mark in the high jump of 1.90 meters (6'2.75") but trailed Jordan Swiger of Glenville State and Anthony Lombardi of Marietta.
Sophomore Lance Washington (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) also notched a top three finish in the triple jump, taking home bronze with a leap of 12.99 meters (42'7.50").
In the throws, sophomore Robert Saltsgiver (Hermitage, Pa. / Hickory) finished fifth in the discus thanks to a final toss of 41.69 meters (136'9"). Saltsgiver also finished eighth in the hammer throw with a final tally of 41.82 meters (137'2").
Robert Morris continues its 2011 outdoor season Saturday, April 2, with the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
