Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University volleyball head coach Dale Starr has announced the signing of Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) to a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
Jay's signing will likely complete one of the largest Colonial recruiting classes in recent memory as the freshman will join six other incoming student-athletes that have previously signed with RMU.
"Becky comes to us as an accomplished student-athlete," Starr said. "She is very athletic and has great potential to be a very good middle hitter in the NEC. She will add talent and depth to our middle hitter position. I expect Becky to come in and compete for playing time right away. As she adjusts to the speed of the college game, I think she will excel due to her athleticism and jumping ability. We are excited to add Becky to our outstanding 2011 recruiting class, and I expect great things from her over the next four years."
Jay was a member of two Division II state championship squads with Padua Franciscan as the Bruins went a combined 53-5 in 2008 and 2009. She was named to the North Coast All-League Team twice in her career and also earned league recognition for her performance in track and field. Jay, who also competes for Maverick Volleyball Club of Parma, Ohio, is also an accomplished scholar as she has posted a 4.4 grade-point average in her high-school career.
Jay joins Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont), Alena Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa. / Montour), Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa High School), Regan Macomson (Hendersonville, N.C. / West Henderson), Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) and Sydney Sizemore (Covington, Ky. / Holy Cross) as incoming freshman who have signed NLIs with Robert Morris. These seven players hail from seven distinct states.
Although the Colonials will have a young team for the 2011 campaign, Starr is looking forward to the upcoming season.
"After graduating five seniors in 2010, this class lays the foundation for the next generation of great volleyball teams at RMU," Starr said. "I am excited to get the season started, get these kids in the gym to join our seven returning players and start working toward winning NEC Championships."
Jay will join a Robert Morris program that went 13-3 in conference play in 2010 and advanced to its 12th-consecutive NEC Tournament, extending the league's longest active streak. The Colonials ended Long Island's reign at the top of the NEC with a thrilling five-set victory over the Blackbirds in the conference semifinals before dropping the rubber match of its season series to Sacred Heart in the program's 13th appearance in a league championship match, a NEC record.
