Spanou Leads Greece To 3-0 Start At European Championships

Ohrid, Macedonia-Robert Morris University women's basketball standout Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Greek National Team) has guided the Greek U-20 National Team to a 3-0 start in the B Division of the 2011 U20 Women's European Championship. The Greek squad picked up victories over Austria, Belgium and Estonia with games against Israel and the Czech Republic remaining in the preliminary round.

The all-around game that led Spanou to Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year honors remains on display at the international level. The 18-year old is second among all scorers averaging 19.7 points per game and ranks eighth in rebounding at 7.3 boards per contest. Spanou is shooting 45.2 percent from the field.

A rising sophomore at Robert Morris, Spanou opened the tournament by going 9-of-13 from the field en route to 21 points and seven rebounds in a 12-point win against Austria. She added 17 points and knocked down 7-of-8 free throws in the next game before dropping 21 point and eight boards against Estonia.

The Greek squad next plays Israel Tuesday, July 12, before finishing preliminary round play against the Czech Republic on July 13. The Czech squad is also undefeated at 3-0.
