Miskolc, Hungary – Robert Morris University women's
basketball sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Greek National U20) was
up to her old tricks on the international stage once again, this time leading
the Greek National U18 Team to the silver medal at the 2011 U18 European
Championships in Miskolc, Greece. It was about this time one month ago that
Spanou helped the Greek U20 to a bronze medal finish while earning most
valuable player honors at the U20 European Championships by averaging 19.4
points and 9.8 boards per game.
In last week's U18 event, Spanou once again nearly averaged
a double-double, scoring 19.3 points a game and ripping down 9.9 rebounds. She
finished with four double-doubles over nine games. Spanou shot 52.1 percent
(63-121) from inside the arc and finished at 41.0 percent (68-166) overall.
The Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year scored at least
12 points in every game, highlighted by a 26-point, 14-rebound performance in the
semifinal contest against Finland. In that game, Spanou played all 40 minutes,
going 11-for-27 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. She also
had double-doubles against Norway (25 pts., 13 reb.), Denmark (12 pts., 13
reb.,) and Israel (24 pts., 16 reb.).
