RMU Inks Kristin Thompson to NLI

Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University volleyball head coach Dale Starr has announced the signing of Kristin Thompson (Monroe, Ohio / Fenwick) to a National Letter of Intent (NLI).

Thompson, a 6'1" middle blocker, boasts a resume of individual and team successes during her interscholastic volleyball career and is also an accomplished scholar.

"Kristin comes to us from a successful high school program that won a state title in Ohio in 2010," Starr said. "She has the potential to be a very physical middle blocker for us. She is athletic and has a very high ceiling. Not having played much competitive club, she is pretty polished and will come in here ready to compete for playing time right away."

Thompson capped her career at Fenwick High School by being selected as the District 15 Player of the Year one year after she helped the Falcons to the 2010 Division III state championship.

Thompson served as a team captain for Fenwick in her senior campaign as she earned First Team honors from the All-Girls' Greater Cincinnati League (GGCL) for the second straight season. She was selected to participate in both the State Senior All-Star Match and the District 15 Senior All-Star Match and claimed 2011 Senior All-Star honors while helping the Falcons reach the quarterfinals in the state tournament.

In addition to taking All-GGCL First Team honors in 2010, Thompson garnered All-District 15 First Team accolades as well as Fenwick's Offensive Player of the Year award while leading the Falcons to the state title. She proceeded to double up, earning each of those three honors in her senior year as well.

Thompson was a starter as a sophomore on Fenwick's 2009 team that reached the state semifinals as she notched All-GGCL and All-District 15 Second Team honors. She also snared Fenwick's Coach's Award and was named as one of Ohio's Best Players for the first of three consecutive years.

Prior to Thompson's arrival on Fenwick's varsity squad, the Falcons had not qualified for the volleyball state tournament since 1980, but she helped the program reach at least the state quarterfinals in each of her three years with the team.

"Our middles will be young, as [Thompson] joins Regan Macomson and Becky Jay, but I think they are a very athletic group who will only get better," Starr said. "I look forward to Kristin coming in and helping us in our quest to win the Northeast Conference (NEC) and qualify for the NCAA tournament."

Thompson was not solely a volleyball standout, though, as she excelled in the classroom as well. She earned highest honors on the honor roll in every quarter she attended Fenwick, was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior and was also selected as a Senior Academic All-Star in 2011.

Thompson certainly has demonstrated multifaceted athletic abilities as she also qualified for regionals in multiple events in track & field, was a starter on the Fenwick basketball team and also was a member of the varsity swimming squad for one year.

Robert Morris qualified for its 13th-consecutive NEC Tournament in 2011, extending the league's longest active streak, as the Colonials have now posted a winning NEC mark in 13 straight seasons, a conference record for any member past or present. RMU also defeated local BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh for the first time in program history in 2011 and had one its student-athletes become the first player ever from the NEC to win a National Player of the Week honor.
