RMU junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) is once again a candidate for FIBA Europe's Young Women's Player of the Year Award. The candidates have been selected based on their
performances and/or special achievements at both club and international level
in 2012.
You can now vote for who you believe are the worthy winners
of this year's awards. Every person who votes goes in with the chance to win
exclusive prizes, including tickets to EuroBasket 2013.
You may vote for three candidates in each of the four
categories.
Voting is currently under way and will continue through January 31 with everyone allowed to vote once a day for each category. Winners are to be announced in mid-February. The public vote will be
combined with that of a selected expert panel to arrive at the final winners
of each category.
Last summer, Spanou was named the MVP of the U20 European
Championship as well and was named to the all-tournament team during the U18
competition.
In the summer of 2012, the 6'1" forward was
dismantling her opponents in the B Division while leading the Greeks to a 7-1
record. She finished second in the event in scoring at 20.4 points per game and
led all players in rebounding (12.6 per game) and double-double, collecting six
in eight games. Spanou led her Greek squad in every major statistical category
including assists (2.5), blocks (0.6) and steals (1.9).
A member of the Greek national program since the age of 14,
Spanou capped her most recent tournament by dropping a career 33 points in the
championship game victory against host nation Czech Republic. She played all 40
minutes in each of the team's final three contests, ripping down a career-best
17 rebounds in the team's final pool-play game against Israel.
This marks the second time in Spanou's career that she has
led Greece to an international title. In 2008, she helped win the B Division of
the Under 16 event. She also earned a team silver medal in last summer's U18
championship.
