Spanou Goes Off For 32 Against Saint Francis

Moon Township, Pa. / Charles L. Sewall Center - Sophomore forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nez Smyrni (Greek National Team)) tallied a career-best 32 points to lead the Robert Morris University women's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory against Saint Francis (Pa.) at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. The Colonials, now 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the Northeast Conference, outscored the Red Flash (12-12, 8-5) 49-30 in the second half to earn the 77-65 win.

Spanou scored 22 of her points in the second half, helping the Colonials recover from an 11-point deficit. The sophomore added a game-high 12 rebounds to record her 14th double-double of the season. She went 12-of-21 from the field, 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, and added four assists in an all-around performance. It was the most points scored by an RMU player since Sade Logan had 33 points against Bryant (Feb. 2, 2009).

Five unanswered points by Alli Williams gave Saint Francis its biggest lead of the game, 42-31, with 18:17 left in regulation. After trading points over the next three minutes, back-to-back baskets by Spanou and a three-pointer from Josette Campbell (London, England / Notre Dame Prep (NW Florida State)) cut a nine-point deficit to two points.

A three-pointer from the Red Flash's Sarah Thorn put the margin at five points just past the halfway point of the second frame. A long jumper by Spanou and a three-pointer by freshman Catherine Matthews (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) tied the game, 57-57. Junior Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) capped the 8-0 run and gave RMU the lead, 60-57, with a traditional three-point play.

Following the game's sixth tie, Spanou drilled a three-pointer and a jumper from the paint to put the Colonials on top by five points. That was the start of a 15-3 run over the game's final three minutes. RMU hit its final eight free throws to ice the game, 77-65.

Robert Morris jumped on top early, 8-2, as senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) scored four of eight points. The Red Flash reacted with a 16-4 run over the next six minutes. Saint Francis used 13 first half turnovers by Robert Morris to hold the lead and take a 35-28 lead into halftime.

Tye added 16 points and six assists as the only other Colonial in double figures.

Williams led Saint Francis with 26 points and also had a team-best eight rebounds. She was 10-21 from the floor.

The Colonials shot over 50 percent for the third time this season hitting 28-of-52 (53.8 percent) shot from the floor. They went 6-of-13 (46.2 percent ) on long range shots and hit 15-of-16 free throws (93.8 percent). The Red Flash converted at 41.7 percent (25-60) and 35.0 percent (7-20) on three-pointers.

These two teams meet again as part of the NEC's Rivalry Week Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa.
