Colonials Place Eighth at NEC Indoor Championships

Landover, Md. - The Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team finished eighth at the 2012 Northeast Conference Indoor Championships over the weekend at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Colonials finished with 28 points. Monmouth claimed the team championship with 170 points.

For RMU, freshman Tip Worob (Denton, Md. / North Caroline) established a new school record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:23.29, which was good enough to finish 13th.

In the 60-meter hurdles, a pair of Colonials scored as junior Tyler Morton (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) finished sixth with a time of 8.55 seconds, while sophomore Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) placed eighth at 8.81 seconds.

Morton was also a part of a 4x400-meter relay squad that finished third with a time of 3:23.21. Joining Morton on the squad were junior Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) and sophomores Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport).

Gentile also took part in the 800-meter run, finishing fifth with a time of 1:55.24, while Roy finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.21 seconds.

In the field events for Robert Morris, sophomore Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) tied for sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.91 meters (6'3.25").

In the throws, junior Brendan Morales (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) finished fourth in the shot put thanks to a toss of 15.83 meters (51'11.25), while junior Charles Thurner-Diaz (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) finished sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.98 meters (52'5.25").

"I think we got out of the indoor championships what we wanted to achieve," head coach Michael Smith said. "We did not ask our kids to go to the well, because we are primarily built to be an outdoor track & field team, with throwers, hurdlers and other events that are not featured during the indoor season. We will be traveling to Florida, North Carolina and Virginia during the first several weeks of the outdoor season, and we want to showcase our talents at the major track meets along the Eastern Seaboard, which take place down south during March and April."

Robert Morris continues its 2012 indoor campaign by taking part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships March 4 and March 5, 2012.
