Furious Comeback Effort Comes Up Short Against Mount

Emmitsburg, Md. / Knott Arena-The Robert Morris University women's basketball team launched a late comeback effort before falling short in an 80-75 loss in Northeast Conference play at Mount St. Mary's Monday night. The loss slips the Colonials record to 12-11 overall and 6-6 in league games while the Mount runs its mark to 9-14 and 5-7.

Robert Morris had four players finish in double-digits with as senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (British National Team)) and junior Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) each tallied 18 points.

Junior Josette Campbell (London, England / Notre Dame Prep (NW Florida State)) had a season-best 17 points and chipped in eight points and three steals. Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni (Greek National Team)) earned her 13th double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds while tacking on four assists.

Jessie Kaufman led the Mount with 16 points while Ashley Chrsitie tallied 10.

Mount St. Mary's surged to an 8-0 lead on four points by Sydney Henderson as the Colonials needed nearly four minutes to get on the scoreboard. The Mount had eight different players score as it pushed the lead to 22-9 midway through the game's opening half.

A pair of free throws by Tye sparked the Robert Morris offense and Spanou scored seven points down the stretch as RMU finished the half on a 17-6 run cutting the margin to 28-26 at the break. The Colonials tallied 12 unanswered points over the final five minutes of the half as they created turnovers and transition buckets from their full court pressure.

The Colonials would launch a 6-0 run that gave them their first lead of the contest on a 15-foot jumper by Tye with 16:06 to play. The Mountaineers retook the lead, 38-37, but RMU answered with a 9-2 run with breakaway layups by Durojaye and Campbell to take their largest lead, 46-40, with 12 minutes to play.

The next 10 minutes, however, belonged to Mount St. Mary's who went on a 29-9 march with five three-pointers, three from Kelly Guerriero who finished with nine points. That left Robert Morris trailing by 15 points with 3:33 left to play.

The Colonials managed to chip in to the lead, cutting the margin to eight points when Spanou buried a three-pointer with 1:36 to play. A Mount turnover led to two points by Campbell and the lead shrunk to six points. Things looked bleak for RMU as the Mount used shots from the chalk to put the margin back to eight points with 26 seconds left to play.

A quick three-pointer by freshman Catherine Matthews (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) cut the margin to five, then a steal and lay-in on the ensuing inbounds by Campbell made it a three-point contest, 78-75, with 17 seconds showing. Tye then came up with a takeaway of the next inbounds attempt, but her errant pass endued up the hands of Sydney Henderson. Mann iced the game with a pair of free throws to give the Mountaineers an 80-75 win.
