Moon Township, Pa. - Sophomore Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) of the Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team earned silver at the 2012 IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J., placing second in the javelin.
Carper held the lead in the event thanks to a toss of 65.44 meters (214'8") before Monmouth's Vincent DuVernois finished with a final tally of 66.17 meters (217'1") in his fourth throw to win the individual title.
Thanks to his performance at the IC4A's, Carper will now advance to the 2012 NCAA East Regional in the javelin at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26.
Carper also took part in the 400-meter hurdles at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, finishing 22nd in the preliminaries thanks to a time of 53.98, his second best time of the year in the event.
Also taking part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships for Robert Morris were juniors Brendan Morales (Westminster, Md. / Westminster), Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and Charles Thurner-Diaz (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) and sophomore Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson).
Morales competed in the shot put, finishing 18th with a final toss of 15.63 meters (51'3.50"), his second best mark of the year in the event. Thurner-Diaz and Ray also competed in the shot put, tying for 24th with a distance of 15.27 meters (50'1.25").
Ray also took part in the discus, finishing 30th with a throw of 46.18 meters (151'6"). Witmyer, meanwhile, appeared in the long jump, earning 22nd with a final leap of 7.01 meters (23'0").
RMU's 4-x400-meter relay squad that consisted of juniors Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) and Tyler Morton (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook), sophomore Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) and freshman Grant Kuiawa (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) finished 23rd with a time of 3:19.15.
