RMU Enjoys The Comforts Of Home

Junior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) set a Robert Morris University track facility record in the javelin as the Colonials men's track & field team competed this past Saturday in the Bennie Benson Invitational held at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island.


Carper's record-breaking throw of 68.55 meters (224'11") captured him first place in the event, and was his second best toss of the outdoor season.

Two RMU student-athletes qualified for the IC4A Championships in the discus. Junior Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) won the event with a toss of 49.13 meters (161'02"), while senior Brendan Morales (Westminster, Pa. / Westminster) finished right behind him with a throw of 47.98 meters (157'05").

In addition, Morales took gold in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.93 meters (170'04"), and his heave of 15.24 meters (50'00") placed him third in the shot put.

Senior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) joined Carper, Mehls, and Morales with a first-place finish in the shot put. His toss of 16.36 meters (53'08.25") placed him right above fellow senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic), who had a mark of 16.20 meters (53'01.75") on his best throw.

Also qualifying for the IC4A Championships was the Colonials' 4x100-meter relay team of junior Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township), sophomore Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg), junior Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area), and freshman Logan Haines-Douglas (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area). Their time of 42.07 seconds knotted them first place in the event.

Dwight and Ayers joined juniors Nick Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) and Freddie Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) in the 4x400-meter relay, which also took home a first-place effort with a time of 3:21.24. Gentile also finished first in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:05.20.

Sophomore Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) won the long jump with a leap of 6.63 meters (21'09.00"), and placed first in the triple jump after a mark of 14.05 meters (46'01.25").

RMU will travel to Baltimore, Md. this weekend for the Morgan State Legacy Meet & Heptathlon.
