Moon Township, Pa. – Redshirt senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) of the Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team was recognized for his combined on and off-track performance Wednesday as he was named as the Northeast Conference (NEC) Men's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
 
To be eligible for the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a sport, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team. Mitchell is currently pursuing a Master's of Science in competitive intelligence systems and owns a cumulative GPA of 3.67.
 
Mitchell earned a NEC title for the Colonials this past season and was previously a three-year starter for the RMU football team.
 
Mitchell took home gold in the NEC Indoor Championships this past February in the shot put with a toss of 16.71 meters. In addition to his league title in the shot, Mitchell claimed a top-three finish in three other meets on the season. He topped the IC4A qualifying standard on four different occasions and also posted four of the nine longest throws in school history in 2013-14.
 
Mitchell also scored big points for the Colonials in another event at the NEC Championships as he claimed silver in the weight throw, for the second consecutive year, with a fling of 17.77 meters. He notched a trio of additional top-three finishes on the season and surpassed the IC4A qualifying standard at four different meets this past season. Mitchell currently owns five of the top 10 marks in program history in the weight throw, including the school record of 62' 5.75".
 
Mitchell tallied 138 career tackles while earning four letters for the Robert Morris football team from 2009-12 and was a member of the program's 2010 NEC championship team that was the first in league history to advance to the NCAA FCS Playoffs.
 
In addition to the honor for Mitchell, a total of 61 student-athletes from Robert Morris covering three sports, including 24 male student-athletes, were named to the 2013-14 NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the honor roll, student-athletes must have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be an active member of an officially recognized varsity team. Freshmen are eligible for the honor roll.
 
Of RMU's 61 student-athletes to be named to the 2013-14 NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll, 16 were named to the NEC Winter Commissioner's Honor Roll. To garner the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75, and freshmen are eligible for the honor roll.
 
RMU led all league schools in selections to the Academic Honor Roll and placed the second highest number of student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
