Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University and Fairleigh Dickinson University men's and women's basketball teams will get together on the Sewall Center hardwood for a pair of basketball games on Saturday, Jan. 16. But it's outside the Colonials' home court where the real impact of the matchups will be felt.
Â
Hoops and Troops presented by Shale Land Services, will benefit Legacies Alive (LA), a non-profit organization located in nearby Washington, Pa. The mission of Legacies Alive is to strengthen and support families of our nation's fallen heroes, and it is designed to bring awareness to the lives and character of all service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Founded by combat veterans, LA is committed to this cause.
Â
"We are so pleased and honored to be a part of this event," LA co-founder Mark Faldowski said. "Our Gold Star families are the essence of everything we do. To recognize them in this setting is extremely gratifying."
Â
The RMU/FDU partnership will include all four teams wearing specially made camouflage uniforms, many of which will be auctioned off afterward with the proceeds, plus a portion of ticket sales, benefitting LA. RMU ROTC cadets will assist in other fundraising endeavors including 50/50 raffles and chances for special fan experience opportunities including lunch with the coaches. The first 1,200 fans will receive a commemorative camouflage t-shirt courtesy of Peoples Natural Gas.
Â
Shale Land Services President Shawn Gatto is an active supporter of Legacies Alive and what it stands for.
Â
"This is a great opportunity to showcase the loved ones of our fallen heroes with the dignity and respect they deserve," Gatto said. "The fact that two quality universities realize the value of supporting our service men and women and their families is truly amazing."
Â
The women's game tips off at 1 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 4 p.m. There will be special ceremonies throughout the day including between games of the doubleheader. Numerous VIPs will be in attendance, and the Gold Star Families will be treated to courtside seating as well as special food and beverage service in the corporate hospitality area of the Sewall Center.
