Colonials Fall to Loyola-Chicago, 3-0

Moon Township, Pa. - Sept. 24, 2009 - The Robert Morris University Colonials evened out their home record to 3-3 after falling to the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20) on Thursday at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Neither team dominated in the first set, as the score remained within one for the majority of the time. At 21-21 the Ramblers tallied three consecutive kills to grab a 24-21 advantage. A service error and an attack error by Loyola-Chicago brought the score within one, but an RMU service error ended the set 25-21 in the Ramblers favor. Freshman Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) led the Colonials with three kills in set one.

Set two remained just as tight as the first. The Colonials tallied their biggest lead at 8-6, but the Ramblers were quickly able to recover. At 10-10 Loyola tallied two points off a kill from Karen Sueppel and an RMU attack error, and maintained the lead until RMU rallied back to knot the score at 16-16. Despite the aggressive comeback, the Ramblers went on a seven point run at 18-18 to take set two 25-18.

The Ramblers dominated set three and started out on a four point run. They did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of play. The Colonials tallied 12 kills to the Ramblers 10, but Loyola attacked at a higher efficiency to earn the set three and match win.

Sophomore Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) led the Colonials with seven kills and five blocks, while junior Corinne Moser (Meyersdale, Pa. / Meyersdale) led the match with 14 digs. Sophomore setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) tallied 26 assists, nine digs and four blocks in the defeat.

The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they take on Illinois-Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
